George Pitts joined Sands Anderson as Principal in January 2015 and is a member of the Business Group and the Bankruptcy and Creditors' Rights team. George has represented debtors, national and regional financial institutions, financing companies, franchisors, creditors' committees, trustees, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), and the Resolution Trust Corporation (RTC) in bankruptcy cases throughout the United States. His practice also includes out-of-court workouts and loan restructurings.

Representative Experience

  • Handled bankruptcy cases in the bankruptcy courts of the states of New York, Delaware, Michigan, California, Texas, Nevada, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, Florida, and the District of Columbia.
  • Handled numerous matters in state and federal courts involving receiverships, mechanics' liens, collections, foreclosures, and issues arising under the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC).
  • Experienced in both jury and non-jury trials in the federal and state courts involving matters such as unfair competition, insurance, business torts, commercial disputes, truth in lending, partnership disputes, and real estate.
  • Served as lead counsel in appellate matters, including reported cases from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and the Supreme Court of Virginia.

George has been named by his peers as 2015 "Lawyer of the Year" in the Washington, DC Bankruptcy Litigation by The Best Lawyers in America and has been included in the directory since 2009.  In 2014, he was listed by Chambers USA as a "recommended practitioner" in Bankruptcy/Restructuring. George was also named by The Legal 500 US a "recommended lawyer" in Corporate Restructuring in 2013.
