RICHMOND, VIRGINIA -- Frank B. (Bunky) Miller, III, who spent 44 years as a lawyer at Sands Anderson Marks & Miller, will be the Bar Association for the City of Richmond's 2009-2010 recipient of the Hunter W. Martin Professionalism Award, firm president Pierce Rucker announced today.
"As a mentor, teacher, firm leader and friend, Bunky has given me and countless others in the legal profession a model of professionalism, decorum, respect and humility that is a high bar indeed for all lawyers, and this recognition is well-deserved," Rucker explained.
Miller will receive the award at the Bar's November 18 luncheon, set for noon at the Omni Hotel in downtown Richmond. In his lengthy career, he served as president of the Virginia Association of Defense Attorneys, chaired the Virginia Bar Association's Proposed Rules of Evidence Committee of Boyd-Graves Conference, and served the Virginia State Bar as Council member, Chair of the Standing Committee on Legal Ethics and Chair of the Disciplinary Board.
"Bunky was a force for clearer rules of evidence and for high ethical standards, as well as a superb practitioner of both," stated Robert B. (Chip) Delano, Jr., one of his Sands Anderson law partners. "There was a time in my career where I could enter any court in the state and the judge, on recognizing me and my firm, would ask immediately about Bunky and happily claim his acquaintance," Delano explained. "He was well-respected by justices, clerks and bailiffs, alike, and was always just a pleasure to work with," he said.
Founded nearly 170 years ago, Sands Anderson has 70 lawyers practicing among its offices in Richmond, Christiansburg, Fredericksburg and McLean, Virginia, and Raleigh, North Carolina. In 2011, it was ranked 11th in the Virginia Lawyers Weekly annual listing of the state's largest law firms. Sands Anderson provides a full range of legal services to corporations and businesses, healthcare providers, financial institutions, state and local governments, the insurance industry and individuals.
