RICHMOND, VIRGINIA--Contributions and pledges amounting to a 50% increase in donations over 2008 were raised for charitable causes in Virginia and North Carolina from the first Community Caring campaign conducted by the law firm Sands Anderson Marks & Miller, P.C., firm president M. Pierce Rucker announced today.

"We took on the responsibility for holding this three-week campaign ourselves so that we could enlarge the number and amount of contributions in our regular fall campaign period, which had been confined to the United Way of Central Virginia," Rucker said.

The result was a gratifying 50% increase in total dollars raised for five organizations, including the United Way. The firm surveyed its lawyers and employees in September for the names of organizations and chose by majority vote the United Way, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Special Olympics Virginia, and state food banks.

The campaign coordination team was composed of Laura A. Brown, Mary Gayle Guidon, Russell Lawson and Mary Alice Wiles of the Richmond office, Rucker stated.
