Phyllis Katz Will Lead First Market Bank Non-Profit Seminar

RICHMOND, VIRGINIA -- Phyllis C. Katz, a leader of the Sands Anderson Marks & Miller, P.C. Non-profit Law team recognized statewide for her pro-bono and non-profit work, will lead a November 16 seminar co-sponsored by First Market Bank and the law firm entitled "Policies that the IRS Wants Your Non-Profit to Have."

"Maintaining the tax-exempt status that is so important to the work and fund development of our non-profit organizations requires compliance with a strict set of operational guidelines encouraged by the Internal Revenue Service," Katz explained, "and these governance policies are often misunderstood by the staff and volunteer leaders of charitable and educational groups."

The session is scheduled for 8:00 a.m. and repeats at 10:00 a.m. at the Ukrop's Support Center, 1st Floor, Large Training Room #1, 2001 Maywill Street (near Staples Mill & Broad - directly east of the Anthem building). Registration begins 20 minutes before each session. Dawn B. Hathaway, Assistant Vice-President of First Market Bank, reports that over 140 attendees are currently registered between the two sessions, which are at maximum capacity.

"This session is the second in a series of  Non-Profit Leadership Seminars that are offered by the bank, and the first with the Sands Anderson law firm, aimed at delivering timely and important business advice to our non-profit community," said Hathaway.

First Market Bank's Private Banking division is located in the Shockhoe Slip offices of the bank at the foot of Virginia Street near the Canal Walk. Its bankers serve the business and non-profit community as well as high net worth individuals with financial service products and accounts.

Katz is a shareholder at the law firm, practicing in non-profit, employment and local government law. She was the recipient of the Lewis B. Powell Jr. Award for the Virginia State Bar in 2008 for her career-long dedication to pro bono work. She co-founded the Legal Information Network for Cancer (LINC), a Virginia non-profit known far and wide for its support of cancer victims and their families. She is listed in the Virginia Business magazine's Virginia Legal Elite and in Virginia Super Lawyers, by the recommendations and votes of her fellow lawyers across the state.

Founded more than 150 years ago, Sands Anderson has 67 lawyers practicing among its offices in Richmond, Blacksburg, Fredericksburg and McLean, Virginia, and the Research Triangle of North Carolina.
