Creasey To Serve On Board for Court Appointed Special Advocates, CASA Protects Interests of Children In Court Proceedings

(September 28, 2005)...Cecil H. Creasey, Jr., chair of the Workers' Compensation practice at the law firm of Sands Anderson Marks & Miller, recently was elected to the Board of Directors of Richmond Court Appointed Special Advocates, firm president C. Thomas Ebel announced today.

"Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) is an organization closely associated with the inherent obligations of our profession," explained Ebel, "in that the volunteer or pro bono legal services focus on representing the interests of children who are involved in proceedings before the court."

Creasey concentrates his practice on employment-related issues and litigation, focusing a considerable portion of his practice on workers' compensation litigation. He eared his J. D. and B. B. A. at the College of William and Mary. He is past chair of the Workers Compensation section of the Virginia Association of Defense Attorneys.

RCASA's focus is ensuring permanent, safe, homes for the abused and neglected children of Richmond, according to Creasey. This mission is pursued by assigning carefully recruited, trained, and supervised community volunteers who are appointed by a judge of the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court to ensure that the children do not get lost in an overburdened legal system or languish in an inappropriate group or foster home. Volunteers present findings to the judge on what is best for each child's future - a safe, permanent home.

The organization's key fund raising focuses on Special Event 2005, an annual event to raise funds to support the mission of CASA. In the past fiscal year, it raised the funds to support 132 volunteers; giving CASA the ability to serve 264 children. This year's event aims to raise enough money to serve an additional 350 children. Eighty-seven cents of every dollar raised by the organization goes directly to support advocacy in a child's best interest, Creasey reports.

Founded more than 150 years ago, Sands Anderson has 76 lawyers practicing among its offices in Richmond, Blacksburg, Fredericksburg and McLean, Virginia, and the Research Triangle of North Carolina. In 2008, it was ranked 9th in the Virginia Lawyers Weekly annual listing of the state’s largest law firms. Sands Anderson provides a full range of legal services to corporations and businesses, healthcare providers, financial institutions, state and local governments, the insurance industry and individuals.
