Russell LawsonSands Anderson Attorney To Address Workplace Issues of Cancer Survivors
RICHMOND, VIRGINIA (December 20, 2006)…Phyllis C. Katz, a partner at the law firm of Sands Anderson Marks & Miller, will be among the featured faculty for a free seminar hosted by the VCU Massey Cancer Center and the Greater Richmond Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation on January 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Science Museum of Virginia, Lynne Penberthy, MD, co-director of the Survivorship Symposia Series, announced recently.
Working people who are diagnosed with cancer have a complex set of legal, financial and professional issues to deal with regarding work, income, health insurance, sick time, medical leave and employer accommodations, among other issues, Penberthy said. The symposium is aimed at giving cancer patients strategies to succeed in the workplace.
The hosts are encouraging patients, family members, employers, human resource professionals, patient advocates and healthcare professionals to attend. Ms. Katz specializes in employment law. A two-time cancer survivor with extensive personal and professional experience in battling its effects, Ms. Katz co-founded the Legal Information Network for Cancer (LINC), a non-profit organization that provides legal assistance to cancer patients. She was appointed by three Virginia governors to oversee employee relations for the Commonwealth, and she is also on the faculty of the University of Richmond’s School of Law.
