RICHMOND, Va. (January 5, 2022) – Sands Anderson announced that Douglas P. Rucker Jr. has retired from the practice of law after 50 years at the firm.
Rucker’s legal career began at Sands Anderson as a summer associate in 1971. Through his storied career, Rucker represented clients in a wide array of legal matters, including litigation and commercial real estate. In the later part of his career, he focused on professional malpractice and became known as a respected defender of lawyers facing legal malpractice claims.
Despite his demanding law practice, Rucker also made time for a wide array of professional and community service activities. His many leadership positions inside and outside of the firm include serving as a member of the firm’s Board of Directors and President of the Virginia Bar Association. He was also active in the Virginia Association of Defense Attorneys and the Defense Research Institute, in addition to being a Fellow of the Virginia Bar Foundation and the American Bar Foundation.
Rucker’s honors include being named a “Leader in the Law” by Virginia Lawyers Weekly and Best Lawyers “Lawyer of the Year” in Professional Malpractice Law. Throughout his career he was regularly recognized in Best Lawyers in America, Virginia Business magazine’s “Legal Elite”, and Virginia Super Lawyers.
