Ashley Burgess is a member of the Business, Finance and Real Estate Practice Group. He concentrates his practice on business transactions, civil litigation, and representing individuals and businesses before judges and juries in state and federal courts across the Commonwealth.  Ashley handles all aspects of civil litigation, including written discovery, depositions, experts, pre-trial motions and memoranda, and examination of witnesses and presentation of arguments at trial. 

Ashley's experience includes complex torts, insurance coverage questions, corporate shareholder disputes, construction claims, consumer protection claims, real estate contests, breach of contract actions, creditor's rights and commercial collection suits. 

His recent accomplishments include:

• A defense verdict in a federal jury trial involving alleged civil rights violations;
• A judgment following a one day bench trial in a hotly contested commercial collections matter, successfully defending the judgment on appeal to the Supreme Court of Virginia and obtaining full satisfaction of the judgment upon enforcement;
• Summary judgment and judgment in favor of the defendant in two separate cases involving self-service storage facilities accused of negligence and breach of contract;

Ashley has conducted lectures and presentations before trade groups and in-house seminars for corporate clients on such topics as the anatomy of a civil lawsuit, insurance law and commercial collections.

Ashley worked as a law clerk with Sands Anderson during the Summer of 2003 and joined the firm directly from law school.  His experience also includes a clerkship with the Pennsylvania Governor's Office of General Counsel, as well as serving as an intern under The Honorable Gary A. Hicks of the Circuit Court for the County of Henrico, Virginia.

Ashley graduated from the George Mason University School of Law, where he was Research Editor of the George Mason Civil Rights Law Journal. He is a 1999 graduate of James Madison University, earning his B.S., magna cum laude.  Ashley hails from Northumberland County in the Northern Neck of Virginia.
